FAQs - Kryptothera - The Cryptid Pursuit
When using the Tracker Spray Item, do I need to leave and re-enter the location before making another capture attempt?
No. If an Item or Event card allows you to re-roll or repeat a failed capture attempt, you do not need to leave and re-enter the location first.
Treat the re-roll as a continuation of the same capture attempt rather than a completely new attempt after failing.
Because of this, the Cryptid is not discarded before the re-roll is resolved. However, you also do not gain a Clue token from the initial failed roll, as the capture attempt has not fully ended yet.
If I fail to capture a Legendary Cryptid, is the card discarded?
No. If a player fails to capture a Legendary Cryptid, the Legendary Cryptid token remains on the game board and its card stays next to the board.
This means the Legendary Cryptid is still active and may be attempted again later by any player.
The rule about discarding a Cryptid card after a failed capture applies to standard Cryptids. Legendary Cryptids are an exception because their token remains on the map until they are successfully captured or removed by another rule effect.
Can I adjust the Event deck setup in a 2-player game so Legendary Cryptids appear earlier?
Yes. Kryptothera was designed to be flexible and difficult to “break”, especially when players want to fine-tune the experience for their group.
In a 2-player game, the Event deck may move more slowly than in games with higher player counts, which means Legendary Cryptids can sometimes appear later than expected. If you want to increase the chance of Legendary Cryptids entering the map earlier, you can try one of the following variants:
Shuffle the Legendary Cryptids into the Event deck so they can begin appearing from Round 1.
Alternatively, split the Event deck into 5 piles instead of 4 during setup, which increases the chance of Legendary Cryptids appearing before Round 10.
Both options are safe to experiment with and should not break the game. Use whichever version creates the most exciting pace for your table.
There is no standee for EXPO Exclusive Legendary Cryptid
This is a collectactable promo card. It does not come with a hexagon token. Instead, it is suggested to use one of the plastic base standees to support the card itself on the map.
Do you have to pay for the crew card ability before the skill check or is it possible to use it after you've rolled?
You have to commit (and pay for it) before the actual roll.
If I return to HQ via an event card, do I collect income and deposit caged Cryptids?
If an event card triggers a return to HQ action while you are not the active player, you follow all the steps minus collecting end of turn income and shopping.
Do I still generate income on a turn where I am in HQ?
You always generate income at the end of your turn, no matter the location. However, you only transfer it to the wallet if you have specifically done the return to HQ action.
If you end your turn at HQ anyway it makes sense to do the return to HQ action in order to heal up and transfer your income to the wallet.
What does the Bigfoot image and the single Claw image mean on the die?
The Bigfoot represents a 6
The Big single Claw represents a 1
What does the colour of the aether coins mean?
Blue = 1 Aether Coin
Red = 3 Aether Coins
Gold = 5 Aether Coins
The Seer Crew Card says new hand limit is 8 but I cannot find anything in the rules that states there is a hand limit.
Your hand limit is 4 cryptid cards. So with the Seer Crew Card you can pay 1 Aether Coin per round and draw 2 additional Cryptid Cards. But you can't have more than 8 Cryptid Cards in your hand.
